Definition

Let AA be an abelian variety over a field kk, with unit e∈A(k)e \in A(k). For a point xx of AA, let tx ⁣:A→At_x \colon A \to A be translation by xx. Let kˉ\bar{k} be an algebraic closure of kk. Let Pic⁡0(A)\operatorname{Pic}^0(A) be the subgroup of the Picard group of classes of line bundles LL with tx∗L≅Lt_x^{*} L \cong L for all x∈A(kˉ)x \in A(\bar{k}). The dual abelian variety of AA is an abelian variety A∨A^\vee over kk with a line bundle PP on A×kA∨A \times_k A^\vee, the Poincaré bundle, such that:

  1. PP restricted to {e}×A∨\set{e} \times A^\vee is trivial;
  2. PP restricted to A×{y}A \times \set{y} lies in Pic⁡0\operatorname{Pic}^0 for every point yy of A∨A^\vee;
  3. (A∨,P)(A^\vee, P) is universal, in the following sense. Let TT be a kk-scheme and LL a line bundle on A×kTA \times_k T. Assume LL is trivial on {e}×T\set{e} \times T and in Pic⁡0\operatorname{Pic}^0 on each fibre A×{t}A \times \set{t}. Then there is a unique morphism f ⁣:T→A∨f \colon T \to A^\vee with L≅(id⁡A×f)∗PL \cong (\id_A \times f)^{*} P.

Remarks

The pair (A∨,P)(A^\vee, P) exists and is unique up to unique isomorphism. When kk is algebraically closed, clause 3 with T=Spec⁡kT = \operatorname{Spec} k gives a bijection A∨(k)≅Pic⁡0(A)A^\vee(k) \cong \operatorname{Pic}^0(A). The dimension of A∨A^\vee equals the dimension of AA, and (A∨)∨≅A(A^\vee)^\vee \cong A.

Example: let EE be an elliptic curve over an algebraically closed field with origin OO. The map P↦𝒪E(P−O)P \mapsto \mathcal{O}_E(P - O) is a bijection from E(k)E(k) onto the line bundles of degree 00, and these are exactly the translation-invariant ones. So E∨≅EE^\vee \cong E.

Non-example: the full Picard group of EE is not the dual. The line bundle 𝒪E(O)\mathcal{O}_E(O) has degree 11, and tx∗𝒪E(O)≅𝒪E(O)t_x^{*} \mathcal{O}_E(O) \cong \mathcal{O}_E(O) fails for every x≠Ox \ne O, so it is not in Pic⁡0(E)\operatorname{Pic}^0(E).

Over ℂ\C, if A=V/ΛA = V / \Lambda, then A∨A^\vee is the quotient of the space of ℂ\C-antilinear forms ff on VV by the lattice of those ff with Im⁡f(Λ)⊆ℤ\operatorname{Im} f(\Lambda) \subseteq \Z.
