Dual object
Builds on Monoidal categoryDual space
Definition
Let be a monoidal category and let be an object of . A dual of is an object together with morphisms and such that:
- ;
- .
These are the zigzag (or triangle) identities. In this situation is called a right dual of , and a left dual of . Some authors exchange the words left and right.
Remarks
Example: in , a finite-dimensional space with basis has the dual space with dual basis as dual. Take and . The first identity sends to , and the second sends to . Non-example: an infinite-dimensional space has no dual in . The element is a finite sum , so the first identity would express every as a combination of , which is impossible. Duals are unique up to unique isomorphism compatible with and . In a symmetric monoidal category left and right duals coincide, and the trace of is .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
