Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space, and let . Let , , be a strongly continuous family of bounded self-adjoint operators on . It is the perturbation written in the interaction picture. For the Dyson series is The term is the identity , and the integrals are taken in the strong sense.
Remarks
If for , the -th term has norm at most , so the series converges in operator norm. Its sum is the unitary solution of with . Writing the -fold integral over the cube with the factors ordered by decreasing time gives the notation , the time-ordered exponential.
Example: if does not depend on , the -fold integral equals , and the series is .
Non-example of the hypothesis: let be unbounded, as for on . Then the terms need not be defined on a common domain, and the series need not converge. It is then only a formal expansion.
