Eden growth model
Builds on Exponential distribution
Example
The Eden growth model on is a random growing sequence of finite connected sets . Start with . Given , let be the set of points of adjacent to some point of . Choose uniformly at random in , independently of the past, and let .
Check of the first two steps in : is the set of the neighbours of , so for a uniform neighbour . Then has points: the further neighbours of and the further neighbours of . So each of these points is added at step with probability .
Remarks
The model was introduced by Murray Eden in 1961 as a model of the growth of cell colonies. It is equivalent to site first-passage percolation with exponential passage times. Give each site an independent waiting time of law exponential with mean , and add a boundary site when its waiting time, started when it joins the boundary, runs out. By the memoryless property, at each addition every boundary site is equally likely to be the next one, so the sequence of sets is the Eden model. The general shape theorem of first-passage percolation shows that the rescaled cluster converges to a deterministic compact convex set. Simulations show that the fluctuations of its boundary follow the scaling of the Kardar–Parisi–Zhang equation.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
