Statement

Let (X,Σ,μ)(X, \Sigma, \mu) be a measure space with μ(X)<∞\mu(X) < \infty. Let f1,f2,…f_1, f_2, \ldots and ff be measurable functions from XX to ℝ\R such that fn(x)→f(x)f_n(x) \to f(x) for almost every x∈Xx \in X. Then for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is a set E∈ΣE \in \Sigma with μ(E)<ε\mu(E) < \varepsilon such that fn→ff_n \to f uniformly on X∖EX \setminus E.

Remarks

For k,n≥1k, n \ge 1 let En,k=⋃m≥n{x:∣fm(x)−f(x)∣≥1/k}E_{n,k} = \bigcup_{m \ge n} \set{x : \abs{f_m(x) - f(x)} \ge 1/k}. For fixed kk these sets decrease in nn to a null set, so continuity from above, which needs μ(X)<∞\mu(X) < \infty, gives nkn_k with μ(Enk,k)<ε/2k\mu(E_{n_k, k}) < \varepsilon / 2^k. The set E=⋃kEnk,kE = \bigcup_k E_{n_k, k} works. Example: fn(x)=xnf_n(x) = x^n on [0,1][0, 1] with Lebesgue measure tends to 00 almost everywhere, not uniformly; it does converge uniformly on [0,1−δ][0, 1 - \delta] for each δ>0\delta > 0. The finite measure hypothesis is necessary: on ℝ\R with Lebesgue measure, fn=𝟏[n,∞)f_n = \mathbf{1}_{[n, \infty)} tends to 00 everywhere. Every set EE of finite measure misses points of [n,∞)[n, \infty) for each nn, so sup⁡X∖Efn=1\sup_{X \setminus E} f_n = 1 and the convergence is never uniform there.

For a student

This is the third of Littlewood's three principles: pointwise convergence is nearly uniform convergence. It is used to prove convergence theorems for integrals, such as the bounded convergence theorem and the Vitali convergence theorem. The convergence it gives, uniform outside sets of small measure, is called almost uniform convergence. Almost uniform convergence implies convergence in measure, so on finite measure spaces almost everywhere convergence implies convergence in measure.
