Ehresmann connection
Builds on Fiber bundleTangent bundleDifferential of a smooth map
Definition
Let be a smooth fibre bundle, and let be the tangent bundle of . The vertical bundle is , where is the differential of . Its fibre is the tangent space at of the fibre through . An Ehresmann connection on is a smooth subbundle , the horizontal bundle, such that for every .
Remarks
Since is onto with kernel , it restricts to an isomorphism . So each tangent vector of has a unique horizontal lift at each point of the fibre above it. Example: for the product bundle with the first projection, is an Ehresmann connection; , and the two are complementary. Non-example: fails the condition when the fibres have positive dimension, because . Equivalently, an Ehresmann connection is a smooth vector-valued -form on with and image ; then . Horizontal lifts of curves exist locally; if the fibres are not compact they may fail to exist for all times. On a vector bundle, the Ehresmann connections invariant under the scalings of the fibres and compatible with addition correspond to connections in the sense of covariant derivatives.
