Statement

Let kk be a field. Let π ⁣:E→B\pi \colon E \to B be a Serre fibration and let f ⁣:X→Bf \colon X \to B be a continuous map, where XX, EE and BB are path-connected and BB is simply connected. Assume that Hn(X;k)H^n(X; k), Hn(E;k)H^n(E; k) and Hn(B;k)H^n(B; k) are finite-dimensional for every nn. Let Ef=X×BEE_f = X \times_B E be the pullback fibration over XX. Then there is a second-quadrant spectral sequence that converges strongly to H∗(Ef;k)H^*(E_f; k). Its second page is E2−p,q=Tor⁡H∗(B;k)−p,q(H∗(X;k),H∗(E;k)),E_2^{-p, q} = \operatorname{Tor}^{-p, q}_{H^*(B; k)}\big(H^*(X; k), H^*(E; k)\big), the bigraded Tor over the cohomology ring H∗(B;k)H^*(B; k), where pp is the homological degree and qq the internal degree.

Remarks

The proof compares the cochains of EfE_f with the derived tensor product of the cochains of XX and EE over the cochains of BB. The spectral sequence comes from filtering a bar construction by bar length. Some condition on π1(B)\pi_1(B) is needed for convergence; for general non-simply-connected BB the spectral sequence may fail to converge to the cohomology of the pullback.

Taking XX a point gives a spectral sequence Tor⁡H∗(B)(k,H∗(E))⇒H∗(F)\operatorname{Tor}_{H^*(B)}(k, H^*(E)) \Rightarrow H^*(F) for the fibre FF. Taking XX a point and EE the contractible path space gives Tor⁡H∗(B)(k,k)⇒H∗(ΩB)\operatorname{Tor}_{H^*(B)}(k, k) \Rightarrow H^*(\Omega B), the cohomology of the loop space.

Example: for B=SnB = S^n with n≥2n \ge 2, H∗(Sn;k)H^*(S^n; k) is an exterior algebra on a class xx of degree nn. Then Tor⁡H∗(Sn)(k,k)\operatorname{Tor}_{H^*(S^n)}(k, k) has one copy of kk in each bidegree (−j,jn)(-j, jn), of total degree j(n−1)j(n-1), and the spectral sequence collapses for degree reasons. This gives Hi(ΩSn;k)≅kH^i(\Omega S^n; k) \cong k when n−1n - 1 divides ii, and 00 otherwise.

Going deeper

For a student

The spectral sequence is a key tool for computing the cohomology of loop spaces and of homogeneous spaces G/HG/H of Lie groups. It shows, for instance, that the cohomology of ΩB\Omega B depends only on the cochain algebra of BB up to quasi-isomorphism when BB is simply connected. It is dual in spirit to the Serre spectral sequence, and the two are often used together.
