Ekeland's variational principle
Builds on Complete metric spaceSemicontinuityPalais–Smale compactness condition
Statement
Let be a complete metric space. Let be lower semicontinuous, bounded below, and not identically . Let and , and let satisfy . Then there is a point such that:
- ;
- ;
- for every with .
Remarks
The proof builds a sequence . Each is chosen in the set of points with , with close to the infimum of on that set. These sets are closed and nested, their diameters tend to , and completeness gives a limit point , which has the three properties. Taking on a Banach space with Gateaux differentiable gives a point with and : an almost minimizer with small derivative. With this, a function that is bounded below and satisfies the Palais–Smale condition attains its minimum. Completeness is needed: on with , and , every violates clause 3 for any , because .

For a student
The principle is a basic tool of nonsmooth analysis and of critical point theory. It produces Palais–Smale sequences for functionals bounded below, and it gives short proofs of the Caristi fixed point theorem and of the Bishop–Phelps theorem. Conversely, a metric space in which the conclusion holds for all such functions is complete, so the principle characterizes completeness.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
