Electrostatic energy
Summary
The electrostatic energy of a system of charges is the work needed to assemble it from charges that start infinitely far apart. For point charges it is a sum over pairs of Coulomb terms. For a continuous distribution it can be written through the electric potential or as an integral of the square of the electric field. Equilibria of charges are critical points of this energy, as in the Thomson problem.
