Definition
Work in geometrized Gaussian units, where the gravitational constant and the speed of light equal . Let be a four-dimensional Lorentzian manifold and let be a nonzero real -form on , the electromagnetic field tensor. The pair is an electrovacuum solution if:
- solves the source-free Maxwell equations in curved spacetime, and , where is the Hodge star of ;
- solves the Einstein field equations , where is the Einstein tensor of and is the electromagnetic stress–energy tensor
Remarks
Example: the Reissner–Nordström metric with charge and the radial field is an electrovacuum solution. Clause 1 holds because is exact, and is a multiple of , which is closed. Clause 2 is a direct computation of the Ricci tensor.
Non-example: the interior Schwarzschild metric is not an electrovacuum solution. Its source is a perfect fluid with positive pressure, whose stress–energy tensor has nonzero trace, while the trace of the electromagnetic stress–energy tensor is always .
Equivalent form: since is trace-free in dimension four, the scalar curvature vanishes, and clause 2 becomes where is the Ricci curvature of . If were allowed, the definition would reduce to a vacuum solution.
