Definition
Let be a prime. A group is an elementary abelian -group if is abelian and every element of has order . A group is elementary abelian if it is an elementary abelian -group for some prime .
Remarks
Example: is elementary abelian: it is abelian, and , so every nonzero element has order .
Non-example: is abelian but not elementary abelian, since has order . Non-example: the symmetric group is not elementary abelian: it is not abelian, and it has elements of orders and .
Writing additively, the scalar multiplication is well defined because , and it makes a vector space over the finite field ; the subgroups are the subspaces. Hence a finite elementary abelian -group is isomorphic to , where is its dimension, and its order is . Its automorphism group is the general linear group . The trivial group is elementary abelian for every , with .
