Elementary class

Definition

Let σ\sigma be a first-order signature. Let KK be a class of σ\sigma-structures. Then KK is an elementary class if there is a first-order theory TT in σ\sigma whose models are exactly the members of KK.

Remarks

If TT can be chosen finite, or equivalently a single sentence, KK is called a basic elementary class. Some authors write EC\mathrm{EC} for basic elementary classes and ECΔ\mathrm{EC}_\Delta for elementary classes.

Example: groups, in the signature (⋅,−1,e)(\cdot, {}^{-1}, e), form a basic elementary class, axiomatized by the three group axioms. Fields of characteristic 00 form an elementary class, using the infinitely many axioms 1+⋯+1≠01 + \cdots + 1 \ne 0; it is not a basic elementary class.

Non-example: torsion groups do not form an elementary class. Suppose TT axiomatized them. Add a new constant cc and the sentences cn≠ec^n \ne e for all n≥1n \ge 1. Each finite subset of this theory has a model, namely a finite cyclic group of large order with cc a generator. By the compactness theorem the whole theory has a model, which is a model of TT with an element of infinite order, a contradiction.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
