Definition
Let be a field, let be the polynomial ring, and let be an ideal of . For , the -th elimination ideal of is Elimination theory is the study of the elimination ideals of ideals and of their zero sets.
Remarks
is an ideal of ; it consists of the consequences of the equations of in which do not occur. Elimination theorem: if is a Gröbner basis of for the lexicographic order with , then is a Gröbner basis of . Closure theorem: let be algebraically closed, and project the zero set of to the last coordinates. Then the zero set of in is the Zariski closure of this projection.
Example: in with the lexicographic order , let . Since , one gets . These two generators have coprime leading terms and , so they form a Gröbner basis, and the first elimination ideal is : eliminating gives the parabola .
Non-example: lies in but not in , because it involves the eliminated variable .
