Ellipse

Definition

Let F1F_1 and F2F_2 be points of the Euclidean plane R2\mathbb{R}^2, and let dd be the Euclidean distance. Let aa be a real number with 2a>d(F1,F2)2a > d(F_1, F_2). The ellipse with the foci F1F_1, F2F_2 and the semi-major axis aa is the set { P∈R2  :  d(P,F1)+d(P,F2)=2a }.\{\, P \in \mathbb{R}^2 \;:\; d(P, F_1) + d(P, F_2) = 2a \,\}.

Remarks

Let c=12d(F1,F2)c = \frac{1}{2} d(F_1, F_2) and b=a2−c2b = \sqrt{a^2 - c^2}. For F1=(−c,0)F_1 = (-c, 0) and F2=(c,0)F_2 = (c, 0), the ellipse is the set of the points with x2a2+y2b2=1\dfrac{x^2}{a^2} + \dfrac{y^2}{b^2} = 1. If F1=F2F_1 = F_2, the ellipse is the circle with the centre F1F_1 and the radius aa. The eccentricity of the ellipse is e=c/ae = c / a, with 0≤e<10 \leq e < 1. The ellipse bounds a region of area πab\pi a b.

Explanations

L1 human

Fix two pins in a board and tie a loose string to both. Pull the string tight with a pencil and move it round: the pencil draws an ellipse. The length of the string is the constant sum 2a2a of the distances to the two pins.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
