Ellipsoid method

Builds on Convex setPositive definite matrixAlgorithm

Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let K⊆ℝnK \subseteq \R^n be a convex set. Assume that KK is given by a separation oracle: for each c∈ℝnc \in \R^n it either states c∈Kc \in K, or returns a∈ℝn∖{0}a \in \R^n \setminus \set{0} with aTx≤aTca^T x \le a^T c for all x∈Kx \in K. For c∈ℝnc \in \R^n and a positive definite matrix PP of size n×nn \times n, let E(c,P)={x∈ℝn:(x−c)TP−1(x−c)≤1}E(c, P) = \set{x \in \R^n : (x - c)^T P^{-1} (x - c) \le 1}. Assume that K⊆E(c0,P0)K \subseteq E(c_0, P_0) for a given ellipsoid. The ellipsoid method is the algorithm that, for k=0,1,2,…k = 0, 1, 2, \dots, runs these steps.

  1. Query the oracle at ckc_k; if ck∈Kc_k \in K, stop and return ckc_k.
  2. Otherwise, take the returned vector aa and set b=Pka/aTPkab = P_k a / \sqrt{a^T P_k a}.
  3. Set ck+1=ck−1n+1bc_{k+1} = c_k - \frac{1}{n + 1} b and Pk+1=n2n2−1(Pk−2n+1bbT)P_{k+1} = \frac{n^2}{n^2 - 1} \bigl(P_k - \frac{2}{n + 1} b b^T\bigr).

Then E(ck+1,Pk+1)E(c_{k+1}, P_{k+1}) is the ellipsoid of least volume containing the half-ellipsoid E(ck,Pk)∩{x:aTx≤aTck}E(c_k, P_k) \cap \set{x : a^T x \le a^T c_k}, and so it contains KK.

Remarks

Example: let n=2n = 2, c0=0c_0 = 0, P0=IP_0 = I, and let K={x:x1≥1/2, x12+x22≤1}K = \set{x : x_1 \ge 1/2,\ x_1^2 + x_2^2 \le 1}. The center 00 is not in KK, and a=(−1,0)a = (-1, 0) separates it, since −x1≤0-x_1 \le 0 on KK. Then b=(−1,0)b = (-1, 0), c1=(1/3,0)c_1 = (1/3, 0) and P1=43(I−23e1e1T)=diag(4/9,4/3)P_1 = \frac{4}{3}\bigl(I - \frac{2}{3} e_1 e_1^T\bigr) = \mathrm{diag}(4/9, 4/3). The new ellipse has semi-axes 2/32/3 and 2/32/\sqrt{3}, and it passes through (1,0)(1, 0) and (0,±1)(0, \pm 1). Its center (1/3,0)(1/3, 0) is not in KK either, so the method goes on.

Non-example: if KK is not convex, a point outside KK need not be separated from KK by a hyperplane, so no separation oracle exists in general.

The volume satisfies vol E(ck+1,Pk+1)<e−1/(2(n+1)) vol E(ck,Pk)\mathrm{vol}\, E(c_{k+1}, P_{k+1}) < e^{-1/(2(n+1))}\, \mathrm{vol}\, E(c_k, P_k). So if KK contains a ball of radius rr and E(c0,P0)E(c_0, P_0) is a ball of radius RR, the method finds a point of KK within O(n2log⁡(R/r))O(n^2 \log(R/r)) steps.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
