Elliptic curve
Builds on Field
Definition
Let be a field. An elliptic curve over is a pair with two properties. is a smooth projective curve over of genus , and is a point of defined over .
Equivalently, it is a curve in the projective plane given by a Weierstrass equation with : Its discriminant must be nonzero, and is the point at infinity. If the characteristic of is not or , every elliptic curve has an equation with , and the condition becomes .
Remarks
Example: over . Here , , and , so the cubic has three distinct roots and is smooth.
Non-example: has . Its projective closure has a node at , where both partial derivatives of vanish, so the smoothness condition fails.
The condition says that has no repeated root in an algebraic closure of . For one has . The set of points over , including , is an abelian group with identity under the chord-and-tangent group law.
