Energy–momentum relation
Statement
Let a particle of mass have energy and momentum in an inertial frame, and let be the speed of light. Then
Remarks
The four-momentum is , and its Minkowski square is , where is the metric of Minkowski space. Writing out gives the relation. For one can check it directly: and give . For a photon, and the relation reduces to . For a particle at rest it gives . For small momentum, , the rest energy plus the Newtonian kinetic energy. The same relation holds for a system, with replaced by its invariant mass and , by its total energy and momentum.
Going deeper
For a student
The relation is the statement that the four-momentum lies on the mass shell, the hyperboloid with . It is used constantly in collision kinematics, for example to find the energy threshold of a reaction from the invariant mass of the initial state. In quantum mechanics it leads, with and , to the Klein–Gordon equation.
