Engel subalgebra

Summary

Let xx be an element of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra 𝔤\mathfrak g. Its Engel subalgebra is the set of y∈𝔤y \in \mathfrak g that are killed by some power of ad⁡x\operatorname{ad} x. It is the generalized eigenspace of ad⁡x\operatorname{ad} x for the eigenvalue 00, and it is a subalgebra containing xx. Engel subalgebras are the main tool for proving that Cartan subalgebras exist. For a suitably generic xx, the Engel subalgebra of xx is a Cartan subalgebra.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)
