Definition

Let 𝔤\mathfrak g be a finite-dimensional Lie algebra over a field kk, and let x∈𝔤x \in \mathfrak g. Let ad⁡x ⁣:𝔤→𝔤\operatorname{ad} x \colon \mathfrak g \to \mathfrak g be the map y↦[x,y]y \mapsto [x, y] of the adjoint representation. The Engel subalgebra of xx is E𝔤(x)={y∈𝔤:(ad⁡x)ny=0 for some n≥1}.E_{\mathfrak g}(x) = \set{y \in \mathfrak g : (\operatorname{ad} x)^n y = 0 \text{ for some } n \ge 1}.

Remarks

The set E𝔤(x)E_{\mathfrak g}(x) is the generalised eigenspace of ad⁡x\operatorname{ad} x for the eigenvalue 00. It is a subalgebra by the Leibniz rule (ad⁡x)n[y,z]=∑i=0n(ni)[(ad⁡x)iy,(ad⁡x)n−iz](\operatorname{ad} x)^n [y, z] = \sum_{i=0}^{n} \binom{n}{i} [(\operatorname{ad} x)^i y, (\operatorname{ad} x)^{n-i} z], and it contains xx.

Example: in the special linear Lie algebra 𝔰𝔩2(k)\mathfrak{sl}_2(k) with char⁡k≠2\operatorname{char} k \ne 2 and basis e,h,fe, h, f, the map ad⁡h\operatorname{ad} h sends e↦2ee \mapsto 2e, h↦0h \mapsto 0 and f↦−2ff \mapsto -2f. So E(h)=khE(h) = kh. Since ad⁡e\operatorname{ad} e is nilpotent, with (ad⁡e)3=0(\operatorname{ad} e)^3 = 0, one gets E(e)=𝔰𝔩2(k)E(e) = \mathfrak{sl}_2(k).

Non-example: kh+kekh + ke is a subalgebra containing hh, but it is not E(h)E(h), since (ad⁡h)ne=2ne≠0(\operatorname{ad} h)^n e = 2^n e \ne 0 for all nn.

If kk is an algebraically closed field of characteristic 00, the Engel subalgebras of smallest dimension are Cartan subalgebras.
