Nonassociative rings and algebras Lie algebras: basic notions Proposition
Jacobi identity
Builds on RingCommutator of a ring
Statement
Let be a ring, not necessarily commutative. For let be their commutator. Then for all ,
Remarks
The proof is a direct expansion. The term equals . In the cyclic sum, each of the six products of appears once with each sign. So the sum is . For example, in the ring of matrices with , and , the three terms are , and . The associativity of is used in this expansion. In the octonions, which are not associative, the commutator does not satisfy the Jacobi identity. The identity is the second axiom of a Lie algebra, so every associative algebra becomes a Lie algebra under the commutator. An equivalent form, given anticommutativity, is : the map is a derivation of the bracket.
Going deeper
For a student
The identity replaces associativity in the theory of Lie algebras. It says that the adjoint map is a derivation, and that preserves brackets. This is why every Lie algebra acts on itself by the adjoint representation. The same identity holds for the Lie bracket of vector fields and for the Poisson bracket of functions.
