Orthogonal Lie algebra

Builds on General linear Lie algebraSkew-symmetric matrixOrthogonal group

Example

Let kk be a field and nβ‰₯1n \ge 1. The orthogonal Lie algebra is 𝔰𝔬n(k)={Xβˆˆπ”€π”©n(k):XT=βˆ’X},\mathfrak{so}_n(k) = \set{X \in \mathfrak{gl}_n(k) : X^T = -X}, the space of skew-symmetric matrices, with the bracket [X,Y]=XYβˆ’YX[X, Y] = XY - YX of the general linear Lie algebra.

Check that it is closed under brackets: if XT=βˆ’XX^T = -X and YT=βˆ’YY^T = -Y, then [X,Y]T=YTXTβˆ’XTYT=YXβˆ’XY=βˆ’[X,Y].[X, Y]^T = Y^T X^T - X^T Y^T = YX - XY = -[X, Y]. For char⁑kβ‰ 2\operatorname{char} k \ne 2, a skew-symmetric matrix has zero diagonal, and dim⁑𝔰𝔬n(k)=n(nβˆ’1)/2\dim \mathfrak{so}_n(k) = n(n-1)/2.

For n=3n = 3 and k=ℝk = \R, let L1,L2,L3L_1, L_2, L_3 be the matrices of the maps v↦eiΓ—vv \mapsto e_i \times v, where e1,e2,e3e_1, e_2, e_3 is the standard basis. They form a basis of 𝔰𝔬3(ℝ)\mathfrak{so}_3(\R) with [L1,L2]=L3[L_1, L_2] = L_3, [L2,L3]=L1[L_2, L_3] = L_1, [L3,L1]=L2[L_3, L_1] = L_2. So 𝔰𝔬3(ℝ)\mathfrak{so}_3(\R) is isomorphic to ℝ3\R^3 with the cross product.

Remarks

For k=ℝk = \R, 𝔰𝔬n(ℝ)\mathfrak{so}_n(\R) is the Lie algebra of the orthogonal group O(n)O(n) and of its identity component SO(n)SO(n). Differentiating A(t)TA(t)=IA(t)^T A(t) = I at t=0t = 0 with A(0)=IA(0) = I gives XT+X=0X^T + X = 0 for X=Aβ€²(0)X = A'(0). More generally, for a symmetric bilinear form with matrix SS, the condition is XTS+SX=0X^T S + S X = 0.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
