Definition

Let kk be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 00, and let 𝔀\mathfrak g be a finite-dimensional Lie algebra over kk. A Borel subalgebra of 𝔀\mathfrak g is a subalgebra π”Ÿ\mathfrak b of 𝔀\mathfrak g such that:

  1. π”Ÿ\mathfrak b is solvable;
  2. no solvable subalgebra of 𝔀\mathfrak g contains π”Ÿ\mathfrak b properly.

Remarks

Example: in the special linear Lie algebra 𝔰𝔩2(k)\mathfrak{sl}_2(k) with basis e,h,fe, h, f and [h,e]=2e[h, e] = 2e, [h,f]=βˆ’2f[h, f] = -2f, [e,f]=h[e, f] = h, let π”Ÿ=kh+ke\mathfrak b = kh + ke. It is a subalgebra with [π”Ÿ,π”Ÿ]=ke[\mathfrak b, \mathfrak b] = ke and [ke,ke]=0[ke, ke] = 0, so it is solvable. The only subalgebra properly containing it is 𝔰𝔩2(k)\mathfrak{sl}_2(k), which is not solvable, so π”Ÿ\mathfrak b is a Borel subalgebra.

Non-example: the line keke is a solvable subalgebra, but it fails clause 2, since it lies in the solvable subalgebra kh+kekh + ke.

In 𝔀𝔩n(k)\mathfrak{gl}_n(k) the upper triangular matrices form a Borel subalgebra, and by Lie's theorem every Borel subalgebra is the stabilizer of a complete flag of subspaces of knk^n. Every solvable subalgebra lies in some Borel subalgebra, by finite dimension. For a semisimple 𝔀\mathfrak g with a Cartan subalgebra π”₯\mathfrak h and a set Ξ¦+\Phi^+ of positive roots, π”Ÿ=π”₯βŠ•β¨Ξ±βˆˆΞ¦+𝔀α\mathfrak b = \mathfrak h \oplus \bigoplus_{\alpha \in \Phi^+} \mathfrak g_\alpha is a Borel subalgebra. Some texts define Borel subalgebras only for semisimple 𝔀\mathfrak g, or over β„‚\C.
