Characteristic of a field
Summary
The characteristic of a field is the least positive number of copies of that add up to . It is when no such number exists. It is the characteristic of the field as a ring, and for a field it is always or a prime number. It decides the prime subfield, and many results of field theory depend on it. For example, the map is a ring homomorphism in characteristic .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
