Definition
Let be a theory in a first-order signature , and let be an infinite cardinal. The theory is -categorical if two conditions hold.
- has a model whose domain has cardinality .
- Any two models of of cardinality are isomorphic.
Remarks
A theory is uncountably categorical if it is -categorical for every uncountable . Some authors drop the existence of a model of size from the definition.
Example: the theory of algebraically closed fields of characteristic is -categorical for every uncountable . By Steinitz's theorem, such a field is determined up to isomorphism by its transcendence degree over , and a field of uncountable size has transcendence degree .
Non-example: is not -categorical. The fields and the algebraic closure of are both countable models, of transcendence degree and , so they are not isomorphic.
The theory of dense linear orders without endpoints is -categorical, by Cantor's back-and-forth argument, but not -categorical for any uncountable .
