statement theorem

R/M is a field iff M is maximal

Statement

Let RR be a commutative ring and let MM be an ideal of RR. Then the quotient ring R/MR/M is a field if and only if MM is a maximal ideal.

Remarks

The proof uses the correspondence theorem: the ideals of R/MR/M are the images of the ideals of RR that contain MM. So MM is maximal if and only if R/MR/M is nonzero and has only the two ideals {0}\{0\} and R/MR/M. A nonzero commutative ring with only these two ideals is a field, by the converse for fields. For example, Z/pZ\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z} is a field because pZp\mathbb{Z} is maximal for pp prime.

Explanations

L1 human

The quotient by an ideal is a field exactly when the ideal is as large as possible. In the integers, (5)(5) is maximal, and Z/5Z\mathbb{Z}/5\mathbb{Z} is a field. The ideal (6)(6) is not maximal, and Z/6Z\mathbb{Z}/6\mathbb{Z} is not a field.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 12 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
