Ring
Definition
A ring is a set with two binary operations and two elements that satisfy the axioms below. The operations are the addition and the multiplication .
- is an abelian group with identity element .
- The multiplication is associative: for all .
- The element is a multiplicative identity: for all .
- The multiplication is distributive over the addition: and for all .
Remarks
Some authors do not require the element . They call the structure of this definition a ring with identity, or a unital ring. The axioms give and for all . The integers , the integers modulo and the real matrices are rings. A ring in which for all is a commutative ring.
Explanations

A ring is a place where you can add, subtract and multiply, as with the integers. You cannot always divide. The order of a product can matter: for two matrices and , and are often different.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
What this needs
To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.
