Reduction modulo p test for irreducibility
Statement
Let be a monic polynomial and let be a prime number. Let be the polynomial whose coefficients are those of modulo . If is irreducible in , then is irreducible in and in .
Remarks
The proof: a factorisation into monic factors of positive degree gives , with and . Irreducibility in then follows by Gauss's lemma. The converse is false: is irreducible over , but it is reducible modulo every prime. Example: has no root in , so it is irreducible over , and so over .
Explanations
L1 human
A factorisation over the integers stays a factorisation after reduction modulo . So if the reduced polynomial does not factor, the original one does not factor either. Over a small finite field, you can check irreducibility by a finite search.
