Prime element

Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring. An element p∈Rp \in R is prime if it has these three properties.

  1. p≠0p \neq 0.
  2. pp is not a unit.
  3. For all a,b∈Ra, b \in R, if p∣abp \mid a b, then p∣ap \mid a or p∣bp \mid b.

Remarks

A nonzero pp is prime if and only if the principal ideal (p)(p) is a prime ideal. The prime elements of Z\mathbb{Z} are the numbers pp and −p-p with pp a prime number. In an integral domain, prime elements are irreducible.

Explanations

L1 human

Euclid's lemma says that a prime number dividing a product divides one of the factors. A prime element of a ring is an element with this property. In the integers, 66 is not prime: 66 divides 2⋅32 \cdot 3, but not 22 or 33.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
