Leading coefficient

Definition

Let RR be a ring and let f=a0+a1x+⋯+anxnf = a_0 + a_1 x + \dots + a_n x^n be a nonzero polynomial in R[x]R[x] of degree dd. The leading coefficient of ff is ada_d. The leading coefficient of the zero polynomial is 00.

Remarks

The leading coefficient of 3x4−x+23x^4 - x + 2 is 33. A polynomial with leading coefficient 11 is monic. In an integral domain, the leading coefficient of fgf g is the product of the leading coefficients of ff and gg.

Explanations

L1 human

The leading coefficient is the number in front of the highest power of xx. For large values of xx, the leading term adxda_d x^d decides the size of a real polynomial.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
