statement theorem

Uniqueness of the algebraic closure

Statement

Let KK be a field, and let LL and L′L' be algebraic closures of KK. Then there is a ring isomorphism σ ⁣:L→L′\sigma \colon L \to L' with σ(c)=c\sigma(c) = c for every c∈Kc \in K.

Remarks

The proof uses Zorn's lemma on the partial isomorphisms between subfields of LL and L′L' that fix KK. The isomorphism is not unique in general. For example, complex conjugation and the identity are two such isomorphisms from C\mathbb{C} to C\mathbb{C} over R\mathbb{R}. So one often writes "the" algebraic closure K‾\overline{K}. The statement is an infinite form of the uniqueness of splitting fields.

Explanations

L1 human

Two algebraic closures of the same field are the same field with different names for the elements. There can be many ways to match them, so the matching is not part of the structure.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
