Subfield

Definition

Let LL be a field. A subfield of LL is a subring K⊆LK \subseteq L such that a−1∈Ka^{-1} \in K for every nonzero a∈Ka \in K.

Remarks

Equivalently, KK contains 00 and 11, and KK is closed under addition, negation, multiplication and the inverse of nonzero elements. A subfield is a field with the operations of LL restricted to KK. The rationals Q\mathbb{Q} are a subfield of R\mathbb{R}, and R\mathbb{R} is a subfield of C\mathbb{C}. The intersection of any family of subfields of LL is a subfield of LL. The intersection of all of them is the prime subfield.

Explanations

A subfield is a smaller field that sits inside a bigger one. You can add, subtract, multiply and divide its elements without leaving it. The integers are a subring of Q\mathbb{Q}, but not a subfield, because 1/2∉Z1/2 \notin \mathbb{Z}.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

  4. Subring definition
  5. Unit of a ring definition

  7. Subfield definition

What depends on this

48 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
