Normal extension
Definition
Let be an algebraic extension. The extension is normal if every irreducible polynomial that has a root in splits over .
Remarks
A finite extension is normal if and only if is the splitting field of some polynomial over . Every extension of degree is normal. For example, is normal. The extension is not normal: has a root in it, but its other two roots are not real. Normality is not transitive: and are normal, but is not.
Explanations
L1 human
A normal extension contains all the roots of a polynomial as soon as it contains one of them. It has no lopsided gaps, like a field that contains one cube root of but not the others.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
