Algebraic extension

Definition

A field extension L/KL/K is algebraic if every element of LL is algebraic over KK.

Remarks

Every finite extension is algebraic, so C/R\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{R} and Q(2)/Q\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2})/\mathbb{Q} are algebraic. The converse fails: the field of all algebraic numbers is an algebraic extension of Q\mathbb{Q} of infinite degree. The extension R/Q\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Q} is not algebraic, because π\pi is transcendental. An algebraically closed field has no algebraic extension other than itself.

Explanations

L1 human

In an algebraic extension, every new element solves a polynomial equation over the base field. There are no elements that behave like free variables.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 13 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
