statement proposition

Finite extensions are algebraic

Statement

Let L/KL/K be a finite extension. Then L/KL/K is algebraic.

Remarks

The proof: let n=[L:K]n = [L : K] and a∈La \in L. The n+1n + 1 elements 1,a,…,an1, a, \dots, a^n are linearly dependent over KK. A linear dependence c0+c1a+⋯+cnan=0c_0 + c_1 a + \dots + c_n a^n = 0 gives a nonzero polynomial with root aa. So every element of LL has degree at most [L:K][L : K] over KK. The converse is false, as the algebraic numbers show. An extension generated by finitely many algebraic elements is finite, by the tower law.

Explanations

L1 human

In a finite-dimensional extension, the powers of an element cannot all be independent. A dependence between the powers is a polynomial equation for the element.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 16 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
