Fixed field

Definition

Let LL be a field and let HH be a group of ring automorphisms of LL. The fixed field of HH is LH={a∈L:σ(a)=a for every σ∈H}.L^H = \{ a \in L : \sigma(a) = a \text{ for every } \sigma \in H \}.

Remarks

The set LHL^H is a subfield of LL, because each σ∈H\sigma \in H respects the field operations. For L=CL = \mathbb{C} and H={id,σ}H = \{\mathrm{id}, \sigma\}, with σ\sigma complex conjugation, LH=RL^H = \mathbb{R}. If HH is finite, then [L:LH]=∣H∣[L : L^H] = |H| and L/LHL/L^H is a Galois extension, by a theorem of Emil Artin. More generally, a group acting on a ring has a fixed subring, the ring of invariants.

Explanations

L1 human

The fixed field is the part of the field that a group of symmetries does not move. In the fundamental theorem of Galois theory, fixed fields turn subgroups into intermediate fields.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
