statement theorem

The order of a finite field is a prime power

Statement

Let FF be a finite field. Then the characteristic of FF is a prime number pp, and ∣F∣=pn|F| = p^n with n=[F:Fp]n = [F : \mathbb{F}_p].

Remarks

The proof: a finite field has nonzero characteristic, and the characteristic of a domain is 00 or prime. The prime subfield is Fp\mathbb{F}_p, and FF is a vector space of dimension nn over it, so it has pnp^n elements. So there is no field with 66 or 1010 elements. The converse, that a field of order pnp^n exists for each n≥1n \ge 1, is the existence theorem.

Explanations

L1 human

A finite field is a vector space over the field with pp elements. A vector space of dimension nn over it has pnp^n elements. So the size of a finite field is always a power of a prime.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 16 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
