definition

Finite field

Definition

A finite field is a field FF whose underlying set is finite. The order of FF is its number of elements ∣F∣|F|.

Remarks

For each prime number pp, the ring Z/pZ\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z} is a finite field of order pp. The order of a finite field is a prime power pnp^n, where pp is the characteristic. The field F2[x]/(x2+x+1)\mathbb{F}_2[x]/(x^2 + x + 1) is a finite field of order 44. It is not Z/4Z\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}, which is not a field. Finite fields are used in number theory, algebraic geometry, cryptography and coding theory.

Explanations

L1 human

A finite field is a finite set where you can add, subtract, multiply and divide by nonzero elements, with the usual rules. The simplest ones are the integers modulo a prime.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
