statement theorem

Z/pZ is a field for p prime

Statement

Let n≥2n \ge 2 be an integer. The ring Z/nZ\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z} of integers modulo nn is a field if and only if nn is a prime number.

Remarks

If n=abn = a b with 1<a,b<n1 < a, b < n, then the classes of aa and bb are nonzero and their product is 00. So Z/nZ\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z} is not an integral domain. If n=pn = p is prime and p∤ap \nmid a, then Bézout's identity gives ax+py=1a x + p y = 1 for some integers x,yx, y. So xx is an inverse of aa modulo pp. The field Z/pZ\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z} is often written Fp\mathbb{F}_p. It is the smallest finite field of characteristic pp.

Explanations

Modulo 55, every nonzero class has an inverse: 1⋅1=11 \cdot 1 = 1, 2⋅3=6≡12 \cdot 3 = 6 \equiv 1 and 4⋅4=16≡14 \cdot 4 = 16 \equiv 1. Modulo 66, the class of 22 has no inverse, because 2x2 x is always even. Division works modulo nn exactly when nn is prime.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
