Simple extension

Definition

A field extension L/KL/K is simple if there is an element θ∈L\theta \in L with L=K(θ)L = K(\theta). Such an element θ\theta is a primitive element, or a generator, of L/KL/K.

Remarks

The extensions C/R\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{R}, generated by ii, and Q(2)/Q\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2})/\mathbb{Q}, generated by 2\sqrt{2}, are simple. The extension Q(3,7)/Q\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{3}, \sqrt{7})/\mathbb{Q} is simple, with the generator 3+7\sqrt{3} + \sqrt{7}. By the primitive element theorem, every finite separable extension is simple. For finite fields, the term "primitive element" usually means a generator of the multiplicative group, which is a stronger condition.

Explanations

L1 human

A simple extension is built by adding one new element to a field. Simple extensions are well understood: there is one kind for an algebraic generator and one kind for a transcendental generator.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 11 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
