Evaluation homomorphism

Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring and let c∈Rc \in R. The evaluation homomorphism at cc is the map ev⁡c ⁣:R[x]→R,ev⁡c(f)=f(c),\operatorname{ev}_c \colon R[x] \to R, \qquad \operatorname{ev}_c(f) = f(c), where f(c)f(c) is the value of ff at cc. It is a ring homomorphism.

Remarks

The map ev⁡c\operatorname{ev}_c is surjective, because ev⁡c(r)=r\operatorname{ev}_c(r) = r for each constant r∈Rr \in R. Its kernel is the principal ideal (x−c)(x - c). This is a form of the factor theorem. The commutativity of RR is necessary: in general (fg)(c)≠f(c)g(c)(f g)(c) \neq f(c) g(c) when cc does not commute with the coefficients.

Explanations

L1 human

Evaluation at cc turns each polynomial into an element of RR. It respects sums and products: to evaluate fgf g, you can evaluate ff and gg and multiply.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
