Two-sided ideal
Definition
Let be a ring. A two-sided ideal of is a subset with these properties.
- is a subgroup of the additive group .
- For all and , and .
So a two-sided ideal is a left ideal that is also a right ideal.
Remarks
In a commutative ring, left ideals, right ideals and two-sided ideals are the same. The kernel of every ring homomorphism is a two-sided ideal. The quotient ring exists exactly when is a two-sided ideal. In the ring of matrices over a field, the only two-sided ideals are and the whole ring.
Explanations
L1 human
In a noncommutative ring, and can be different. A two-sided ideal must absorb products from both sides. This is the condition that makes the quotient ring work.
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
