definition

Monic polynomial

Definition

Let RR be a ring. A polynomial f∈R[x]f \in R[x] is monic if its leading coefficient is 11.

Remarks

The polynomial x2−2x^2 - 2 is monic, and 2x2−12x^2 - 1 is not. In a nonzero ring, a monic polynomial is not zero. The product of two monic polynomials is monic, over every commutative ring. Over a field, each nonzero polynomial is a constant times exactly one monic polynomial.

Explanations

L1 human

A monic polynomial starts with xdx^d, with no number in front. Over a field, you can make any nonzero polynomial monic by dividing by its leading coefficient.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
