definition

Group of units of a ring

Definition

Let RR be a ring. The group of units of RR is the set R×R^\times of the units of RR, with the multiplication of RR. It is a group with identity element 11.

Remarks

The set R×R^\times is closed under multiplication: if uu and vv are units, then (uv)−1=v−1u−1(u v)^{-1} = v^{-1} u^{-1}. Other notations for R×R^\times are R∗R^* and U(R)U(R). The group Z×={1,−1}\mathbb{Z}^\times = \{1, -1\} has order 22. For a field KK, K×=K∖{0}K^\times = K \setminus \{0\}.

Explanations

L1 human

The units of a ring are the elements with an inverse. If you multiply two units, you get a unit again. So the units form a group under multiplication.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

8 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
