Frobenius endomorphism

Definition

Let pp be a prime number and let RR be a commutative ring of characteristic pp. The Frobenius endomorphism of RR is the map F ⁣:R→RF \colon R \to R, F(x)=xpF(x) = x^p. It is a ring homomorphism from RR to RR.

Remarks

The map FF preserves products because RR is commutative. It preserves sums by the freshman's dream. If RR is an integral domain, then FF is injective. If RR is a finite field, then FF is an automorphism of RR. On Fp\mathbb{F}_p, the map FF is the identity, by Fermat's little theorem.

Explanations

L1 human

In characteristic pp, raising to the pp-th power respects addition and multiplication. So it is a homomorphism from the ring to itself. This simple map is a basic tool in the study of finite fields.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
