Formal derivative
Definition
Let be a ring and let . The formal derivative of is the polynomial where is the sum of copies of .
Remarks
The derivative is additive, and for each constant . If is commutative, the product rule holds: . In characteristic , the derivative of is . So a nonconstant polynomial can have derivative . The derivative detects repeated roots.
Explanations
L1 human
The formal derivative uses the rule from calculus, but it is pure algebra. You never take a limit, so it works over the integers modulo too. For example, the derivative of is .
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
