Polynomials in several variables

Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring and let n≥1n \ge 1 be an integer. For α=(α1,…,αn)∈Nn\alpha = (\alpha_1, \dots, \alpha_n) \in \mathbb{N}^n, the monomial xαx^\alpha is the formal product x1α1⋯xnαnx_1^{\alpha_1} \cdots x_n^{\alpha_n}. A polynomial in x1,…,xnx_1, \dots, x_n over RR is a finite sum ∑αcαxα\sum_\alpha c_\alpha x^\alpha with cα∈Rc_\alpha \in R. Two polynomials are equal if and only if they have the same coefficient cαc_\alpha for each α\alpha. The ring R[x1,…,xn]R[x_1, \dots, x_n] is the set of these polynomials, with coefficientwise addition and the product (∑αcαxα)(∑βdβxβ)=∑γ(∑α+β=γcαdβ)xγ.\Big(\sum_\alpha c_\alpha x^\alpha\Big) \Big(\sum_\beta d_\beta x^\beta\Big) = \sum_\gamma \Big(\sum_{\alpha + \beta = \gamma} c_\alpha d_\beta\Big) x^\gamma.

Remarks

There is a natural isomorphism R[x1,…,xn]≅R[x1,…,xn−1][xn]R[x_1, \dots, x_n] \cong R[x_1, \dots, x_{n-1}][x_n]. So the ring can also be built by repeated use of the polynomial ring in one variable. The same construction works for any set of variables, with exponent maps that are zero at all but finitely many variables. The polynomial x1x2+x32x_1 x_2 + x_3^2 is an element of Z[x1,x2,x3]\mathbb{Z}[x_1, x_2, x_3].

Explanations

A polynomial in several variables is a finite sum of terms like 5x2yz35 x^2 y z^3. You add and multiply such polynomials with the usual rules of algebra. Each term is a coefficient times a product of powers of the variables.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
