Division ring

Definition

A division ring is a ring DD with these two properties.

  1. 1≠01 \neq 0 in DD.
  2. Every nonzero element of DD is a unit: for each a≠0a \neq 0 in DD, there is b∈Db \in D with ab=ba=1a b = b a = 1.

Remarks

A commutative division ring is a field. The quaternions are a division ring that is not commutative. By Wedderburn's little theorem, every finite division ring is a field.

Explanations

L1 human

In a division ring, you can divide by every nonzero element, as in a field. But aba b and bab a can be different. The quaternions of Hamilton are the standard example.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

2 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
