Binary relation

Definition

Let AA and BB be sets. A binary relation from AA to BB is a subset RR of the Cartesian product A×BA \times B. For a∈Aa \in A and b∈Bb \in B, write aRba \mathrel{R} b when (a,b)∈R(a, b) \in R. A binary relation on AA is a binary relation from AA to AA.

Remarks

Examples on Z\mathbb{Z} are ≤\le, == and divisibility ∣\mid. A relation on a finite set can be drawn as a directed graph, with an arrow from aa to bb when aRba \mathrel{R} b. A function is a special kind of binary relation.

Explanations

L1 human

A relation is a rule that says which pairs belong together. For the relation "divides" on {1,2,3,4}\{1, 2, 3, 4\}, the pair (2,4)(2, 4) is in the relation and the pair (3,4)(3, 4) is not.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
