Separable space

Definition

A topological space XX is separable when there is a countable subset D⊆XD \subseteq X that is dense in XX.

Remarks

The real line is separable, because Q\mathbb{Q} is countable and dense. In the same way Rn\mathbb{R}^n is separable, with the dense set Qn\mathbb{Q}^n. Each second-countable space is separable. For metric spaces, the converse is also true. An uncountable set with the discrete metric is not separable, because each dense subset is the whole set.

Explanations

L1 human

A list of points can approximate a separable space. Each point of the space has points of the list as close as you want. For R\mathbb{R}, the list of all fractions does the job.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
