Isolated point

Definition

Let XX be a topological space, let S⊆XS \subseteq X and let x∈Sx \in S. The point xx is an isolated point of SS when there is an open set UU of XX with U∩S={x}U \cap S = \{x\}.

Remarks

Each point of SS is either an isolated point of SS or a limit point of SS, and not both. In R\mathbb{R}, each point of Z\mathbb{Z} is an isolated point of Z\mathbb{Z}: take U=(n−1/2,n+1/2)U = (n - 1/2, n + 1/2). A point xx is an isolated point of XX itself if and only if {x}\{x\} is open.

Explanations

L1 human

An isolated point is a point of the set that stands alone: a small region about it contains no other point of the set. In the set {0}∪[1,2]\{0\} \cup [1, 2], the point 00 is isolated, but 11 is not.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
